Welsh Boys Championship

Caernarfon Golf Club played host to the Welsh Boys Championship and saw four days of superb golf across the course. Strong winds and continuous rain made it a tough time for the competitors, but the course remained in excellent condition, giving the 72 youngsters taking part an even chance of victory.

The Championship format was 36 holes of strokeplay on the first day of competition to determin the Welsh Strokeplay Champion. And despite the tough weather, Christopher Nugent of Fulford Heath returned a magnificent new junior course record of 67, beating the previous mark of Holyhead’s Scott Fenwick.

Nugent shot a round of 72 in the afternoon to finish one over par on 139 and secure the title, ahead of Wrexham’s Rhodri Fieldhouse, who returned with 68 and 74 for a total of 142. Third was Rhodri Hartson of Felixtowe Ferry, while the cup for the best Under-16 went to Cardiff’s Oliver Baker.

The top 16 players went on to compete in the matchplay stages for the title of Welsh Boys Champion, while the next 16 qualififed for the Plate. Nugent continued his success by sealing the title with a two hole victory over Jack Bush of Morlais Castle in the final. The Plate was won by Mold player Luke Jackson, beating Vale of Glamorgan’s Ryan Davies by a solitary hole in the final.
